Billie Holiday and Hazel Scott at a party, by Roy DeCarava (1957)

Roy DeCarava (1919 – 2009) was an American artist. He took up photography in the late 1940s; he became one of the most important photographers by chronicling the lives of ordinary people and jazz giants.
His goal, as he said, was “a creative expression, the kind of penetrating insight and understanding of Negroes which I believe only a Negro photographer can interpret.”
